About Wheel of Time
In the beginning, the Creator made the Wheel of Time, which spins the Pattern of the Ages using the lives of men and women as its threads. The Wheel has seven spokes, each representing an age, and it is rotated by the True Source from which the One Power, a source of energy, is drawn. The One Power is divided into male and female halves, saidin and saidar, which work in opposition and in unison to drive the Wheel; those who can use this power are known as channelers. One organization of channelers is the Aes Sedai, a name meaning "Servants of All" in the Old Tongue.
The Creator imprisoned Shai'tan, known as the Dark One, a powerful, evil being, at the moment of creation, sealing him away from the Wheel. At some point, however, the Dark One was given purchase in the world through the machinations of people who opened his prison, and began his efforts to conquer the world, creation, and even the Wheel itself. In response to this, the Wheel spun out the Dragon, a channeler of immense power, to be a champion for the Light. Due to the cyclical nature of the Wheel, there has been no definitive victory for the forces of the Light; the war has been fought innumerable times since the dawn of Creation. The Dragon would defeat Shai'tan and seal him from the Wheel, only to have him break out (or be released) several millennia later, forcing the Dragon to be reborn and repeat the entire process.
For these reasons, the return of the Dragon is a cause for both hope and fear amongst the populace. On the one hand, the Dragon Reborn is the only person capable of defeating Shai'tan, who will inevitably begin to escape his prison. On the other, the Dragon Reborn will still be prey to the madness caused by the taint of evil in saidin, and is a harbinger of the horrifying fact that Shai'tan is once more breaking free. The only man who can save the world is also the man most likely to destroy it.
This Dragon's name is Rand al'Thor, and the Wheel of Time series chronicles his struggles and those of his friends with international politics, the One Power, and of course, against the Shadow itself.
Differences Between the Age of Destiny & the Wheel of Time
Please Note: If you haven't read the books this little blurb might not mean to much to you.
Major differences between our roleplay and Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time books start off with the fact that our main characters are YOUR characters. While the Ta'Veren and friends do help change the world, it's your characters and mine whose stories are focused upon here at Age of Destiny.
Currently in Jordan's timeline we are at about Book 8 however, many small & large changes have occurred in our world compared to Jordan's. For most people, they won't be hard to understand and the choices were made based on the number of users we had available at the website to make the events happen (such as: The White Tower did not split in our RP... it did have a internal political split however.) See our AoD Timeline for more specific details.
Peoples of the World
What follows is a general bit of information about each major group of people from the Wheel of Time Book Series, as they are currently being played in Age of Destiny. This is generalized information, of course, but you can learn more about individual groups and people by clicking the links below.
Aes Sedai & Warders
Aes Sedai are all women and the wielders of the One Power. Their title means the Servants of All in the Old Tongue. In the distant Age of Legends they used their gift freely and enjoyed much prestige and respect. But since the Breaking of the World people blame the Aes Sedai of the disaster and see them as manipulative witches. The Aes Sedai have become distanced from the people and reside mainly in the White Tower, their seat of power. The prophesised signs of the Last Battle are clear but will the Servants help the world again or maintain their imperialistic politics?
The Tower Guards and Warders are the protectors and Bonded bodyguards of the Aes Sedai, located in the White Tower. They are the world's finest fighters and lead interesting and dangerous lives in their service. Adventure, peril and bloodshed is their lot.
The Aiel
The Aiel are people living between the "wetlanders" in the west and the Sharans in the east, in a desert which the Aiel call The Three-fold Land and which everyone else calls the Aiel Waste. They have earned a reputation as skilled warriors but little else is known about them in the wider world. Aiel can be recognized through their height, characteristic pale eyes, and red or blond hair. They are divided into clans, septs and warrior societies with fierce loyalty and they follow a complex honour code called ji'e'toh.
The Band of the Red Hand
What started as a mercenary group turning into heroes of the Battle of Tarwin's Gap against the Shadowspwan, has become one of the largest armies of the world. Lead by a ta'veren general Matrim Cauthon, who supposedly never looses a battle, the Band of the Red Hand boasts an impressive cavalry, infantry, scouts and medics. It is time to dance with Jak O' the Shadows so roll the dice.
